Releasing our Regret

by | Oct 18, 2014 | Uncategorized

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are-yet was without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15)

Do you remember the old Frank Sinatra song called “My Way”? I can recall some of the lines and the one that comes back to me is “Regrets, I’ve had a few, but then again, too few to mention.” It always struck me that the line was full of vanity and pride, not allowing for remorse, reflection or repentance.

Most of us have regrets about something we’ve done in the past, which hurt others or even ourselves. We carry a lot OF emotional and spiritual baggage around with us, which later surfaces either as anxiety or depression. When we try to carry our regrets on our own, we burden our hearts and weary our souls. That’s when we need help. That’s when we need a Counselor. That’s when we need a Savior.

According to scripture, Jesus was tempted in every way possible, which means He perfectly understands the dilemmas we face throughout our life. And although He didn’t succumb to temptation, He knows our weaknesses, so He can remedy our regrets by forgiving our past mistakes, even for those personal events that we cannot seem to forgive ourselves.

As we approach the end of our days, it may be that some regrets will pile up, haunt us, and cause us to be concerned; or it may be that we can set them aside because Christ has taken them, forgiven them, and forgotten them. I guess the choice is ours.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You know everything about us – our failings and weaknesses, our past regrets and secret sins. Forgive us for falling away and yielding to temptation. Help us to recover our faith by placing our souls into Your loving hands. In Your Holy Name we pray. Amen.
