No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

(Matthew 6:24 ESV)

And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

(Joshua 24:15 ESV)

The Lord is asking today. Who will you serve? Will you serve me or will you serve the devil? You can’t have it both ways.

There’s a phrase I heard many years ago. “You can’t have your cake and eat it too.” I never understood it as a kid. Especially if I had a birthday cake in front of me. I thought, here’s my cake and I get to eat it. But now I believe I know the meaning. I believe it means you can’t serve the devil and expect to go to heaven. The devil wants to bring people down and keep them oppressed. God isn’t like that. He wants us living in prosperity and health. But so many of us just aren’t doing that. We let daily problems bring us down. We dwell on the fact that life is hard and we don’t have the luxuries that others do. We don’t have to live like our neighbors. We don’t need a 50-inch plasma TV. We don’t need a big expensive house or car.

You may envy the people who do have that stuff. But are they really happy? I was talking to a new neighbor the other day. She visited me and was admiring my little apartment. And it is small. But it’s big enough for me. God knew I would need this apartment. He knew what was coming. He knew I would need a close spot to park. He knew exactly what I needed!

If we just trust God, He will work everything out for us. If we just stay close to Him. If we just trust and obey God He will work all things out for us.

So I ask again. Who will you serve? God or the devil?
