My Food is to do the Will of Him Who Sent Me

by | Jan 16, 2016 | Body of Christ, Faith

“‘My food,’ said Jesus, ‘is to do the will of Him who sent me and to finish His work.'” (John 4:34-35)

Jesus has just met with the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. After telling the woman her life story, she believes that He is the Christ and runs back into her town to tell the others that the Christ has come. Meanwhile, Jesus’ disciples return bringing food. They know nothing about the meeting between Jesus and the woman, and are understandably surprised that Jesus isn’t hungry! The disciples said to each other, i (John 4:33), to which Jesus replies, “My food . . . is to do the will of Him who sent me and to finish His work!”

In other words, Jesus is saying that He gets SO much fulfillment from doing His Father’s will, that it even satisfies His physical need for nourishment! God’s work held such a priority for Him that nothing else mattered!

Can you imagine what Christian churches might be like if we all followed in Jesus’ steps? If we all put aside our misguided priorities and allowed God’s Work to be first in our lives? I would wager to bet that if this were the case, our churches would be a lot fuller, and those filling the pews would be FAR more on-fire for Jesus!

Father God, Help me to put You and Your work first in my life. Help me to displace my own misguided priorities. Open my heart and help me to see and hear where You are at work. Take away my shyness and my need for acceptance, and help me to be bold and focused, following the leading of Your Spirit! May I, too, be able to say: “My food . . . is to do the will of Him who sent me and to finish His work!”

In His love,
Lyn
