I WAS BLIND, BUT NOW I SEE, PART 10

by | Jan 16, 2016 | Dependency, Grace, I was blind, but now I see (A Mini-Series), Relationship, Religion

Today’s mini-sermon is the 10th of a 12-part series on the 9th chapter of John.  It will be appearing in the Saturday, Sunday and Thursday additions of the Answers2Prayer newsletters.

“Then they asked him, ‘What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?’ He answered, ‘I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?’ Then they hurled insults at him and said, ‘You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses! We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.’ The man answered, ‘Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly man who does his will.  Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.  If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.’” (John 9:26-33)

My youngest son used to want to become a “workman”.  Any time you would ask him what he would like to do when he was older, he would reply: “I want to be a workman!”  If you tried to inquire and find out what a workman does, he would reply: “They work”.

“What kind of work?”

“Work.”

Did he know what workmen do?  Sure!  But did he really know what was involved?  No, he had no clue!  (Now that he is older he has a better understanding of what a workman does.  This is why he now wants to be a veterinarian!)

We like to think that we know a lot.  We all do.  “Have you heard about how well the Blue Jays did yesterday?”

“Yeah, they were fantastic!”  (aside:  What are Blue Jays?  Aren’t they the birds that peck on trees?  Or perhaps a kind of duck?  What about a baseball team!)

How often are we faced with spiritual leaders who have that same attitude?  “We know about God!” But in reality they have no knowledge of God at all!

Jesus said to the spiritual leaders of His days: John 5:39-40: “You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life.  These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.”  They may have been reading their Bibles, but they did not understand.  Worse than that, they were dominating others with concepts that were false and anti-Biblical!  John 5:28,29: “We are disciples of Moses!  We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”   They were blind!  They did not realize that in front of them was the realization of every prophecy they had read in the Old Testament!

Jesus knew all about them: Matt 15:14 “Leave them; they are blind guides.  If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”  He is also aware of the blind guides of our days! And just like that blind man, we should reply to them:

Joh 9:30-33: “Now that is remarkable!  You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.  We know that God does not listen to sinners.  He listens to the godly man who does his will.  Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.  If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”

Only Jesus can heal!  Only God can transform a human life to His glory!  Only Jesus is the Christ and our salvation!

“But if we can not depend on our spiritual leaders of our day, who can we depend on?”

Jesus has the answers to this question.  In fact He has the answers to all of our questions.  John 16:13 3 “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.”

If you want to know the truth, stop relying on earthly leaders.  They may look pretty, dedicated and intelligent from the outside, but it’s who lives inside of them that counts. Matt 23:27: “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!  You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean.”

Let us start to depend more and more on God’s Holy Spirit.  He is the divine One.  Jesus promised that He would lead us into all truth.  Can we trust in Jesus’ words?  If we can’t, we do not know Him.  God’s Holy Spirit is the only One who will lead to all of God’s truth.  He will never go against His Holy Word, the Bible.  He will open your eyes and the Bible will come alive in your hands through Him.  It’s an amazing experience.  Please see the Answered Prayer section of today’s newsletter for my personal testimony!

Will you let Him into your life? Invite Him in today and let Him dwell into your hearts.  He will lead you to all truth.  Not a little bit of truth here and there.  Not a church’s truth.  But God’s truth.  Will you let Him in now?

In His love,

Rob Chaffart
