Planted and Growing

by | Oct 18, 2014 | Witnessing

I walked down into an isolated part of the garden where we had planted some trees and shrubs. They had been there for a couple of years now and I wanted to see how they were doing.

The seasons had been good and the young trees were thriving. A couple were as tall as I and others were not far behind.

Then I noticed a curious thing growing near the tallest tree. There were broad leaves and a most beautiful red flower. It was large and quite spectacular and I wondered how it got there.

I had never grown such a plant and the flower was something I had never seen before. However I recognised the leaves as belonging to a certain family but had no idea how it had got into my garden. Somewhere, sometime, somebody had planted a seed and somehow some day the soil had been used around the tree we had bought. We watered the tree and the seed had come to life and now gave us this magnificent gift.

It reminded me that we are called to sow seed and Jesus said the seed is the word of God. Then some people hear the word and, like the seed sown on good soil, they accept it and produce a crop. (Mark 4:20).

We don’t know how or where they grow or when and why they blossom but as Paul once said, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.” (1st Corinthians 3:6)

Jesus has sent sowers all through the world planting seeds in His garden and like my blossom, God made them grow. Somebody planted you, somebody cared for you and now Jesus is looking for you to blossom where you were planted.
