Are you Listening?

by | Oct 18, 2014 | Communication, Relationship

How does the Lord choose to speak to you? Are you listening when He is trying to get your attention? It may be that He uses a fellow believer to speak truth to you. Perhaps He makes His will known to you through the Holy Scriptures. There are even times we get to hear His voice inside of our heads…speaking straight to our heart.

Are you paying attention so you will know when the Lord is speaking to you? We can’t hear Him if we aren’t listening. All kinds of things bombard our senses. Sometimes we have to simply “turn off” the world around us, and be still…be still and listen. It is a privilege to be in the Lord’s presence, but it is also a command to “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10a)

A dear friend called me this morning to share of just such an experience. She has been waiting for the Lord to make clear for her a path of ministry to choose. She came to a point of just wanting to know what the Lord desired of her so she could get on with things! She cried out to God in prayer and asked Him to make His will known to her. After much prayer and supplication, the Lord spoke a verse to her heart. It was not a verse she was familiar with, but when she looked it up, she stood in awe of our Creator! For with one verse, He made His will known to her, and gave her clear direction for her new ministry…what an awesome God we serve!

I have on occasion heard the Lord speak to me…but more often than not, He uses His Word to communicate to me. There was a time I was meeting with a group of ladies and some disharmony ensued…I prayed to the Lord for direction, and for Him to lead me to a verse that would be evident of His will for this group. I simply let my Bible fall open, and there in the middle of the page was Hebrews 10:25, “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Isn’t the Lord amazing?

So again, I ask you…are you listening? If the Lord does not have your attention, then how will you ever hear what He has to say to you? Be in prayer. Be in the Word. Be still…
