Living in the Past

by | Jun 11, 2024 | Memories

“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”

(Isaiah 43:18-19 ESV)

“Say not, ‘Why were the former days better than these?’ For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.”

(Ecclesiastes 7:10 ESV)

Do you dwell on things in the past? Do you keep dredging up old memories? Well, it’s time to stop it. Memories are good to have. But don’t get stuck reliving them. That is not where any of us should be. Isaiah 43:18 tells us to forget the former things and not to dwell on the past.

I don’t know about you, but there are times I can get lost in the past memories. Usually the not so good memories. Those are the ones the devil likes to dredge up for us. But we need to stand our ground and tell the devil no. Stand up to him. You don’t have to live with anxiety and fear. When he comes around, use the blood of Jesus and make him flee. God wants us living in the present, not the past. We can’t change the past, so why not just let it go? I know, easier said than done. I get it.

But when those unpleasant memories occupy your thoughts, change the “channel,” so to speak. Think of something pleasant. Something pleasant for me is getting to watch two of my great grandkids again. They can chase any unpleasant thoughts away just by thinking about them.  All my kids and grandkids are pleasant thoughts for me.

So next time memories come back that you want to forget, think of something positive. Chase them away and tell them there is no room for them.

Have a blessed day, everyone.
