Perhaps you have heard the term “a centre of influence”? In the banking industry, such a person is very influential, because he/she can improve your market access and believability through referrals, testimonials and impact on other important contacts. There are a number of COI’s in the Bible too: think of Esther, Daniel, Nehemiah and Paul. God placed them in certain pivotal positions, at key times in history, to serve Him in saving their people and witnessing to the nations.
Nehemiah was a Jewish exile living in Persia, the cupbearer to King Artaxerxes. He had been mourning and praying for his countrymen and their exile, and the king liked him so much that when he noticed Nehemiah looking unhappy, he thought perhaps his servant was sick. Having sent up a quick prayer, Nehemiah answered the king: “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favour in your sight, that you sent me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ graves, that I may rebuild it”. (Nehemiah 2:5 ESV) The good hand of the Lord was on Nehemiah, and he was instrumental in rebuilding Jerusalem for the exiled Jews to return to. In no way could he have done this by himself; he had to be an influencer to make it happen.
A centre of influence achieved that position by skill, leadership, a willingness to work hard, and no fear when faced with big challenges. Did you know that God has placed many faithful Christians in positions of great influence in the provincial and federal governments today? You will hear no media coverage of the important roles such people fulfill, but God is working quietly and efficiently in sustaining our nation through the obedience of His servants.
Do you know personally such faithful centres of influence? They may be in your local city council, school boards, or hospital administration. Pray for such people, as Nehemiah prayed so passionately for his people, because God listens to and honours such prayers for His faithful servants. Be assured He is carefully placing His centres of influence in key roles at such a time as this, for the goals of His Kingdom and the security of our dear country.
