We all have our preferences when it comes to physical attraction. My husband tells me that he prefers brunettes over blondes. People prefer mates, of all different shapes, sizes, and characteristics.
I had two children with blonde hair and blue eyes. I was delighted at these beautiful features. I also adorned the splendor of my dark haired son.
Like many women, when it comes to men, I always liked the tall-dark and handsome type. But, something changed all of that when I met my husband. At first I had no interest in him at all, because I just wasn’t physically attracted. But continued encounters started pulling on my heart strings. I no longer cared about the outward appearances, I was hooked on his heart.
He had a charm and loving character that I found hard to pass up. It wasn’t long before I saw how his green eyes sparkled and his beautiful bright smile brought a delight to my heart. Once I saw his heart, the rest of his attractiveness was quickly revealed to me.
It reminds me of the story of David, in the Old Testament book, 1 Samuel. God sent Samuel to anoint the one whom He had already selected to be the new king of Israel. God directed Samuel to go to the house of Jesse, in Bethlehem. It was here that Samuel would find God’s selection of the new king. Upon seeing Jesse’s son Eliab, Samuel thought, ” Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here…”
But the Lord corrected Samuel. He told him “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
God wasn’t concerned how big and strong the man appeared. He chose a man of character to be king. God taught me, just as he taught Samuel; people aren’t always as they outwardly appear to be. To find the perfect match, I, too, must look at the heart.
