“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1)
Storm clouds roll on the horizon of everyday life. It is oftentimes difficult to find shelter – to find a calm in the storm. You can find that calm in the Psalms. “If you make the Most High your dwelling – even the Lord, who is my refuge – then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent.” (Psalm 91:9)
Imagine living in a tent. The wind begins whipping around outside your tent as a tornado approaches and the petrifying sound of a railroad train roaring down the tracks toward you in a head-on collision. Suddenly, there is silence – a deafening silence as you enter the eye of the storm. The silence envelops your being, and fear strangles the life breath out of you. You are terrorized by the moments of uncertainty as you lay in wait of what is to come. “A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.” (Psalm 91:7)
The storm passes you by and you step outside to observe the devastation around you. “You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.” (Psalm 91:8) Surely the Lord has provided His angels to stand guard over you. “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” (Psalm 91:11)
Life takes on a tornado-like character as we hurry through each day, bombarded with head-on collisions that stress us to the point of near-death and exhaustion. Rushing, like a railroad train rolling down the tracks from one appointment to the next. How do we find the eye of the storm; how do we reach the quiet spot in the midst of chaos? “He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.” (Psalm 91:15)
