LESSONS IN LOVE FROM 1 CORINTHIANS 13, PART 13: Love Endures Forever

by | Oct 18, 2014 | Endurance, Lessons In Love (1 Corinthians 13) (A Mini-Series), Love

“Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears.” (1 Corinthians 13:8-10)

Endure. The dictionary defines it as “to have or gain continued or lasting acknowledgment or recognition, as of worth, merit or greatness.” Love endures beyond all other things. In Isaiah 40:8 God said, “The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.” The bible is God’s love letter to us. It is our measuring stick, our guide, our light, our strength, our ever-present help in time of need.

Pursue love above all else. Eagerly desire the best gifts – prophesy, tongues, knowledge – but recognize what God values above all else. The Bible makes it clear what is the greatest of these. Jesus said the greatest commandment is to “love the Lord your God with all of your heart and mind and soul and strength.” (Matthew 22:37) 1 John 6:8 says, “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”  Love never fails. Love . . . never . . . fails. Those three small words hold a great treasure. Love never fails. Think about all the things in your life that ARE subject to failure. EVERYTHING made by the hand of man will fail. Machines will break down, houses will fall down, and eventually everything will melt down, but love will endure. How will you choose to spend your life here on earth? Will you pursue wealth or fame? Will you pursue honor and glory? Or will you pour yourself, your time, your energy into something that will stand the test of time? Will you love as Jesus loved you, as you are called to do, or will you love only you? The choice is yours, and God makes it plain what His command is for you.

“Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew 10:39) “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13) “This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” (1 John 4:10) “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

Love endures.

Yours in love and in Christ,
