Priorities

by | Nov 10, 2021 | Priority

“‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but few are needed or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better and it will not be taken away from her.'” (Luke 10:41-42 NIV)

“Jesus loved Martha, her sister and Lazarus.” (John 11:15 NIV)

Do you have your priorities straight? For that matter, do I have mine straight? Not as well as I should, I will admit.

Let’s look at Mary and Martha from the Bible. They were the sisters of Lazarus, whom Jesus raised from the dead. Mary sat at Jesus’s feet listening to Him talk. Martha was working hard to fix and serve a meal for the group gathered there. Martha was understandably frustrated and asked Jesus to tell Mary to get up and help her.

One account I read said Martha snapped at Jesus. It takes guts to yell at the Savior. And something only a true and trusted friend could get by with. But Mary had her priorities straight. She was listening to Jesus. She was listening to her Savior.

We need to be more like Mary. We need to be spending more time in the word, soaking up everything we can. But all too often, we become like Martha. We become distracted by everyday cares and stray away from Jesus.

Let’s decide to more like Mary and less like Martha. Don’t let frustration take over. Don’t let anything turn you away from your walk with Jesus. So if you are guilty of being like Martha, repent. Then change your ways. I am going to. I would rather be like Mary.

Have a wonderful day everyone!
