A typical woman is a wife and mother. We see such woman in Sarah, in Naomi, in Ruth, in Hannah, in Eunice, in Elizabeth, etc. Some women may be called to more public positions. A queen may adorn a throne. A Florence Nightingale may live as an angel of mercy to the suffering. A mother Theresa for the poor and the deprived. These are exceptional persons. Every Jewess was not a Deborah, Esther or Mary Magdalene. Therefore, with domestic responsibility the typical woman will be judged primarily in regard to domestic duties. The true wife is the helpmeet of her husband. Her first aim will be to do him good and care for him. If she fails here, her public service is of little account.
The true wife is her husband’s confidant. She is worthy of confidence by being faithful, sympathetic and intelligent. Nothing can be more foolish and deceiving than the notion that a lady should have no occupation.
The ideal woman rises early and busies herself with many affairs. By her foresight, she makes available warm clothing for the winter, food and necessities for her home through the provision of her husband, and therefore she laughs when the snow comes. It is exhorted for a woman to be strong in the Lord to conquer her weaknesses. No doubt the ailment of many women spring from lassitude, indolence and self-surrender.
How much may the tone of a woman’s conversation do to keep peace in a household and shed over it a spirit of love and gentleness? The honorable woman, fears the Lord. In her influence, her husband is known in the gates. She helps the husband to honour. Herself too busy in the private sphere to take her part directly in public life, still indirectly she is a great force in the large world through her godly influence over her husband. Her thoughtfulness, energy, careful oversight and encouraging words are the chief causes of the welfare of her happy, comfortable home.
Womanhood is a call. The woman is a home keeper but a Christian woman is a soul-keeper. While she has life to keep, she strives to aid the breadwinner. She is wise and manages her time and her goals for each day for many demand their rightful share from her insufficient precious time. The busy task of home keeping is partly thrilling and partly strenuous, for behind a godly, loving home is the busy godly woman.
Therefore, beloved daughters in the Lord, strike the balance, keep your family and keep your life. Strive to keep your home together and set your eyes on your home above for Jesus Christ is your Helper and Source of strength.
