“How do you fight fear when you travel alone…I mean, being blind?” a woman asked me after I spoke at a retreat.
“Good question,” I said. “I have to think about that.”
Years ago, I traveled from Orlando to La Paz, Bolivia by myself for the first time. I prayed and trusted God would bring someone to help me navigate through the airport during the lay-over. All turned out okay. In fact, I made friends along the way. The trip was enjoyable. Fear was replaced by faith. And now traveling has turned to a fabulously fun adventure for me.
And the fun continues. I’ve been flying across the country and abroad for years. And not because I’m particularly brave, just bold to count on two things—the company of the Holy Spirit and my white cane.
How about you? Do you wonder how to overcome fear or dread the facing risky situations? Here are three secrets to hop on the airplane of faith and leave fear on the ground.
1. Recognize the reason. Are you fearful of something that hasn’t happened yet? If so, God is already at work. The future is in His hands and so is the situation you fear.
2. Remember that negative emotions don’t need to control your decisions, your plans or your focus. God’s wisdom is the weapon that defeats fear.
3. Repeat God’s promise that He will never abandon you. With Him beside you, fear has no power.
When thoughts of fear come at us like an army ready to destroy, God’s says: “Be strong and courageous my friend. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:6).
Father, thank you for the guarantee that no matter where we are, where we go, what we face, what we experience, fear has no place when you’re at the center of our life, our day and our thoughts. In Jesus’ name, amen.
