Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.”
(Psalm 126:2 ESV)
When was the last time you had a really good laugh? I have never been one to laugh out loud. It runs in my family on my dad’s side. Don’t get me wrong, I laugh just not out loud. How do you feel after laughing? I feel better, lighter somehow. Like a burden has been lifted.
The site I use for scriptures listed 100 verses on laughter. Do you think it might be an important thing? I looked it up. Laughter is mentioned in the Bible around 40 times depending on the translation. According to AI Overview, “God gave us laughter as a gift of joy, a tool for healing, and a reflection of our created nature as human beings.
Key Theological and Personal Purposes of Laughter
A Good Medicine for the Soul: The Bible notes that “a joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones” (Proverbs 17:22 ESV).
Laughter helps relieve stress, relax the body, and carry life’s heavy burdens. An Expression of Faith and Surprise: Scripture features moments of human laughter tied to God’s unexpected promises, such as Abraham and Sarah laughing in disbelief and later in joy when Isaac was born (whose name means “he laughs”). Laughter often comes from delightful incongruity that humbles us and reminds us of our limits.
A Bridge for Human Connection: Laughter is a social experience that builds community, fosters safety, and deepens bonds between people. A Reminder of Divine Sovereignty: The Bible also describes God laughing—not out of cruelty, but as a sovereign response to human arrogance or plans that try to thwart His will (see Psalm 2:4 ESV). For believers, recognizing God’s control brings deep comfort and silences fear.”
So laugh. Laughter chases away the darkness. So chase the darkness away today. Laugh at the devil. He really hates it when we laugh.
Have a blessed day.
