There is one place in my garden where weeds never grow.
It is such a relief to find just one place in the garden that is totally free of rubbish and totally free of demands. It allows me to rest and just enjoy being there. There is no work to do, it is shaded from the heat of the day and also protected from strong winds.
It is a place heavily overhung with a massive, spreading rose bush and twining through the rose is a vine. Together they overhang a bank below them and they have formed a dense covering over a tunnel-like path.
One place where weeds never grow
Roaming Echidnas have silently carved out a narrow, secret track.
If you crouch low enough you can follow the five-metre tunnel, end to end. I inched along it this morning completely covered from the sight of anything below me. If you looked up from the bottom of the bank, you would have no clue that I was there.
On the higher side, I was shielded by sturdy trunks and branches. I was virtually untouchable. It was a safe place, a quiet place, a place for stillness and peace.
No weeds grew there. The vine was a buckler against them, surrounding the space. The rose was a shield against them, shading the soil.
And I thought how often God illustrates his protection as a covering. When He sent His people on a journey through the wilderness, they were covered by a cloud in the day and by a light in the night.
But the illustration I like best is the promise of His wings over us:
‘He will cover you with his wings; you will find refuge beneath his pinions. His truth will be a shield and buckler.’ (Psalm 91:4).
Under His wings no weeds can grow.
