“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
(1 John 4:1 ESV)
“But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”
(Hebrews 5:14 ESV)
According to google, discernment is “perception in the absence of judgment with a view to obtaining spiritual guidance and understanding.”
But what really is discernment? It means to understand or know something through the power of the Holy Spirit. When you discern something you examine, prove, or test; scrutinize.
Have you ever had a feeling something was going to happen? No, I’m not talking about psychic powers. I’m talking about that small still voice saying don’t do that, or go this way instead of that way. That’s the Holy Spirit talking to you. I have had that feeling before where I needed to go a different way than I usually go. I brushed it off, but the feeling got stronger, so I listened. I found out later that there had been a fatal car wreck, and I would have been going through that spot at about that time.
God protects us. But even when I wasn’t walking as closely with God, I still had discernment. He still talked to me. He would warn me of things. Did I listen? Not always. Sometimes, He allowed something to happen just to get my attention.
So if you have a feeling about something, listen to it. The Holy Spirit will never steer you wrong. But be careful. The devil will also try to steer you wrong. So weigh it and see if it’s of God. If it seems like a bad idea, then it probably is.
Have a blessed day, everyone.
