“So … that you, being rooted and grounded in love … know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:17,19)
A great many years ago I purchased a couple of small potted green houseplants and hung them in the kitchen. Today the containers are still okay, a bit scratched up, worn and faded but not cracked or leaking. The leaves stay shiny and healthy looking; occasionally they drop a few yellowed leaves when I forget to water them.
These plants look good, yet they grow very little. Thing is, they are rootbound. Have been for a long time. If they were to be repotted into larger containers, they would grow to be much larger. However, as it is, they do continue to live, even with being rootbound in quite small spacea.
We can be rootbound in all sorts of ways- emotionally, physically, and spiritually. In order to grow, and not simply exist, we need to enlarge the spaces in which we find ourselves, and as we grow to seek even larger places. The saying, ‘nothing changes is nothing changes’ is so true.
We don’t want to stay rootbound. There’s so much more. More understanding, more experiences and opportunities for growth and service, and always more of God.
This is good news.
