Building a House

by | Feb 26, 2025 | New Creation, New Life, Presence, Sanctification

“Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a Son. And we are His house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.

(Hebrews 3:1-6 ESV)

I remember when I was five and my parents were building a new two-story house in Southern California, in an area that used to be cow pastures. Building a house takes a great many steps. At first there was nothing but churned up dirt. As the weeks went by, the frame of the house went up. We kids loved to walk in and out of the studs that were all that existed at that point for walls, stepping from inside to outside in a heartbeat.

Then came the roof and the flooring, the plumbing and electricity, and the final touches—glass in the windows, paint on the walls. And then we moved in. That was what every step of house building was aiming for—the day we could move in.

In today’s reading, the writer refers to Jesus as “worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself.” Wait a minute. Moses is a house? Jesus is the builder of Moses?

Oh yes—and not just Moses. “We are His house,” the Bible says, “if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.” You and I and every Christian, taken all together, are “being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit” (Ephesians 2:22b). We are God’s house. And He intends to move in—in fact, He has already moved in, as Jesus tells us: “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him” (John 14:23b ESV).

How can this be? We know what we are—poor half-built walls, unable to keep the wind out, let alone a pack of curious children! But God isn’t finished with us. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus bought us to be His own. He has made Himself our strong foundation, and we will never fall. And the day will come when God’s house is complete in all its beauty and glory—when God’s people will rejoice together to see what Jesus has built. And He will live with us and in us forever.

WE PRAY: Dear Lord, make Your home with me now and forever! Amen.

Reflection Questions:
1. If you were a professional builder, how much trouble would you spend on the house you yourself intend to live in—just a little, a lot, or as much as necessary?
2. Why bother to spend so much extra time and trouble?
3. What does this tell you about how God feels about you—the house He intends to live in forever?
