Qara: Called by Name

by | Jan 23, 2026 | Calling, Identity, Purpose

But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel:  ‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.

(Isaiah 43:1 NIV)

The Hebrew word translated “called” is qaraʾ (קָרָא), pronounced kah-RAH.  It appears over 700 times in the Old Testament, and means more than simply speaking a person’s name.  When God uses this word, it’s a personal address that establishes relationship and identity.

Names matter.  There’s a world of difference between someone shouting “Hey you!” across a crowded room and hearing your own name spoken with recognition. One is impersonal. The other lets you know that someone sees you, knows you, and is reaching out specifically to you.

In Scripture, to be called by name means you are known intimately and chosen deliberately. God called Abraham to initiate a covenant relationship. He called Moses from the burning bush to lead his people.  He called Samuel in the night, teaching a young boy that God speaks to those he has set apart. These were not random moments. God knew exactly who he was calling.

This pattern of personal calling reaches its fullness in Isaiah 43, where God speaks not just to select individuals, but to his entire people.  Notice the progression.  God starts with creation.  Our calling flows from the very purpose for which we were made.  “I have created you… I have formed you… I have redeemed you… I have called you by name.”  Each verb builds on the last, moving from creation to intimate, personal relationship.

The phrase “you are mine” is the culmination of this calling. God calls Israel into a relationship.  When you belong to someone who calls you by name, you have identity and purpose. You’re not just a number in the system, a face in the crowd.

This matters because we live in a world that often treats us as anonymous, reducing us to usernames, account numbers, and data points. Algorithms track our behavior but they don’t know our hearts. Over time, it’s easy to wonder whether anyone really sees us.

Into that uncertainty, God speaks the same word to us that he spoke to Israel: “I have called you by name, you are mine.” This isn’t just ancient poetry. It’s a promise for the present.  God knows your name.  Not just the one on your birth certificate, but the deepest truth of who you are. He formed you with intention, redeemed you with love, and calls you personally.

When God calls you to a particular decision, relationship, or step of obedience, it’s never impersonal marching orders. It’s always in the context of this relationship. He calls you by name and invites you to follow him as the person he made you to be.

Your calling is a personal summons from the God who knows you completely and claims you as his own.  Listen.  He’s calling your name right now.

Prayer: Father, thank you that you know my name and call me yours. In a world that often treats me as anonymous or insignificant, remind me that I belong to you.  Help me to listen for your voice and to respond with trust and obedience.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
