In Matthews 12: 31-32 says that every blasphemy will be forgiven men but the blasphemy against the spirit will not be forgiven men. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man it will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit it will not be forgiven him either in this age or in the age to come.
I have talked with Christians and non Christians who were afraid they had committed the unpardonable sin. Just about everyone had a different understanding of exactly what it was, but they all felt hopeless. There are many verses in the bible that promise the forgiveness of our sins, but only one passage refers to an unforgettable sin.
Jesus had healed a demon possessed man who was blind and could not speak so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw. (Matt. 12:22) The multitudes following Jesus began to say, this man cannot be the son of David can he? They wondered if he was the Messiah. The Pharisees accused Jesus of casting demons by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons. Jesus response to their accusation led him to conclude what he said in Matthew 12:31-32. In this passage he refers to blasphemy. We define blasphemy as cursing God or willfully degrading things considered holy. The Pharisees had seen proof of Christ’s deity, but instead of acknowledging God and the power of the Holy Spirit, they attributed the power to Satan.
Christ is not in the world as he was then, but although the Holy Spirit still accomplishes supernatural things through His servants, they are merely representatives of the King. Unpardonable sin is not a singular event for which a person later feels remorse, it is an out going, willful and active rejection of the testimony of the Holy Spirit concerning the person and truth of Christ.
No matter how evil our sins, there is forgiveness for them. God forgave David for his adultery, dishonesty and murder (see 2 Samuel 12:13 and Psalm 51) . He forgave Simon Peter denial of our Lord accompanied by profanity (Matthew 26:74-75), and He can forgive each of us when we repent.
