“A man who is kind benefits himself, but a cruel man hurts himself.”
(Proverbs 11:17 ESV)
“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness,”
(Colossians 3:12 ESV)
We are not perfect. But when strangers come into church, how do you great them? Do you great them or look down your nose at them because they aren’t dressed like you. Maybe they have ragged clothes on or don’t smell the best. If you don’t know what to say, try this:
“Welcome to Church. This is a place of love, hope, safety, and forgiveness. There will be food for the hungry. Living water for the thirsty. We are so glad you are here. You are invited. You are loved. Come on in—we’ve been waiting for you.”
I can truthfully say my church is friendly and inviting. Members greet strangers, and so does our pastor. We have a church of love, understanding, and compassion. And that is how it should be.
So many times, people puff up because they think they are more important than others. But you’re not. We are created the same. Some have fallen on hard times, but that is no excuse to ignore them. That’s when we need to love on them more. Let people know they are not alone. Tell them about Jesus first. Then slip them a few bucks or buy them a sandwich. You might just be the beacon of light they needed. Show them the love of Jesus.
Have a blessed day, everyone.
