The Indescribable Gift

by | Dec 27, 2023 | Christmas, God's Love

“Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” (2 Corinthians 9:15 NIV)

Another Christmas has come and gone. The children were enthralled with the tree and the piles of brightly wrapped gifts beneath it. They couldn’t wait to start handing out presents and then to rip into their own as well as to help the rest of us tear into ours.

What delight they experienced at the array of new and marvelous toys that had come their way, toys that would be enjoyed and played with, hopefully for many days to come.

Yet, as I replayed Christmas morning in my mind’s eye, and read today’s verse as part of my morning quiet time, I considered that although another Christmas had come and gone, God’s gift of Jesus just goes on and on blessing us each and every day. When His gift of this world and all that it entails, His gifts of family and friends, material wealth and health and life are all gone, faded away — as we know they will — His gift will still continue: the indescribable gift of perfect love through Christ Jesus, the Baby born in a manger Who grew up and laid down His perfect life for sinful mankind, that we might receive and embrace abundant and eternal life.

Yes, another Christmas Day has come and gone. But God’s indescribable gift of Christ continues, never to fade or crumble or diminish, but only to grow brighter and more lovely and powerful each day as we open our hearts to His presence through the Holy Spirit, His truth through the Word of God — the Scriptures — and His fellowship through His people, the church.

His indescribable gift allows us to experience Christmas not just one day a year, but every day, every year.

Prayer: Father God, thank You for Your indescribable gift of perfect love: Jesus, the Christmas present that never stops giving and blessing us each and every day. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.
