Words Are Weapons

by | Oct 20, 2021 | Tongue, Weapons

“There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” (Proverbs 12:18 ESV)

“I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak.” (Matthew 12:36 ESV)

There are all kinds of weapons. But did you know words can be weapons? Has anyone ever called you a name that wasn’t so nice? Or insulted you? How did it make you feel? Did it hurt your feelings?

Words can cut deep. They don’t leave a physical scar, but can leave emotional scars. How do you fight back when someone is using words to hurt you? Do you fight back with angry or hurtful words? Or just keep quiet?

I was always the second choice. I kept quiet. But all those angry and hurtful words left deep emotional scars that has taken years to heal from.

There is a song called Let Love Win by Carrollton. This is a line from it: “When we lay down our weapons we will let love win.”

I have found that if I can stay calm under attack, I can make it through insults or angry words. I have decided to lay down my weapons. Words have no power if you don’t let them. Jesus endured many insults while on the cross. He never once spoke out against them. In fact, He asked God for their forgiveness.

Sometimes I really don’t want to stay calm in the face of angry or hurtful words. I want to lash out right back at them. But that causes more problems. By staying calm I can usually defuse the situation quicker. So if you are in a battle, lay down your weapon and let love win.

Have a blessed day.
