“The fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you . . . In this Year of Jubilee everyone is to return to his own property.” (Lev. 25:11,13) “In the Year of Jubilee the field will revert to the person from whom he bought it, the one whose land it was.” (Lev 27:24) “If one of your countrymen becomes poor among you and sells himself to you . . . he is to work for you until the Year of Jubilee. Then he and his children are to be released” (Lev 25:39,40)
Jubilee? Most of the ceremonial practices I had read about up until this point were somewhat familiar to me; but this one had me stumped: What was the significance of proclaiming the 50th year a year of “Jubilee”? Why were the people who had been sold into slavery released during Jubilee? Why was any land that had been sold to another to be returned to its original owner?
As I pondered these questions, the history of this Earth flew before my eyes. God created this world. We sold it to Satan. Now, for nearly 6000 years, it has been under the control of the enemy, and we have been slaves to sin! But, when Jesus returns, the Earth will return to its rightful owner, Jesus Christ, and all of us who have been encased for so long in slavery will be set free! Was the practice of Jubilee to help us remember that the Earth will not always be under enemy control?
Lord, how I long for Jubilee!
In His love,
