On Top of the World

by | Oct 18, 2014 | Uncategorized

“O Sovereign Lord, you have only begun to show your greatness and the strength of your hand to me, your servant. Is there any god in heaven or on earth who can perform such great and mighty deeds as you do?” (Deuteronomy 3:24)

Don’t you love being ‘on top of the world’?  It’s a great feeling. Everything seems to be going j-u-s-t right. Gotta love those times.

Yesterday when I parked at the supermarket lot, I gazed up at the extraordinary blue. What a day. One of those chamber-of-commerce afternoons where the vivid green of the trees met the deep blue sundrenched sky.

On the highest part of a tall streetlight, a mockingbird was comfortably perched. Checking things out, taking a rest. There he was, on top of his world

Most days that aren’t those mountain-peak highs since we live in the valley called everyday life- the average, the ups, the downs.

Sometimes these times are a little harder to like and accept than when we’re feeling tip-top. I’ve heard questions like, “So where was God anyway? Why did He let it happen?”, “God didn’t answer my prayers about that”.

Here is some good news: no matter what it seems like, no matter what is going on, God is still sovereign. He is still in the midst, keeping every one of His promises (something like 7,000 of them in the Bible). He’s not distant, He’s not uncaring nor uninvolved. He is a personal God, wanting the best for His children and a close relationship with them.

The Word of the Lord is truth; here are a few verses that have helped me gain a more ‘on top of the world’ perspective in my everyday walk:

“For you, O Lord, are the Most High over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods.” (Psalm 97:9)

“Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.” (1 Chronicles 29:11)

“Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, and let your glory be over all the earth.” (Psalm 108:5)

“O Lord Almighty, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.” (Isaiah 37:16)

“now, our God, the great God, God majestic and terrible, loyal in covenant and love, Don’t treat lightly the trouble that has come to us …” (Nehemiah 9:32)

“But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.” (Psalm 73:28)

“Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let them say among the nations, ‘The Lord reigns!'” (1 Chronicles 16:31)
