Momma's Final Resting Place

I walked up to the casket, where my momma lay in state.

These tears, that I'd been holding back, so long, just couldn't wait.

I knew I'd lost my best friend as I gazed upon her face,

But, I also knew that Heaven would be her final resting place.

Momma raised eight children and she worked all of her life,

Trying to be a good mother and an understanding wife.

Four kids belonged to grandma; dad's mom, who'd passed away.

She died when I was four years old; from a heart attack, they say.

Dad worked hard in the family mine. Sometimes, he worked all night

While momma cooked, washed, and cleaned;

trying to make the house look bright.

She read the family Bible late at night, when the chores were done;

Teaching us kids about the Father and His only begotten son.

Momma was so loving, so unselfish, and so kind.

Then finally, on down through the years, Alzheimer took her mind.

But I know, as I stand here, looking down on mom once more,

That the Lord is surely waiting for her on that distant shore.

I have a consolation, knowing mom was saved by grace

And I know she's gone to Heaven, by that smile upon her face.

So, momma, now, I'll dry my tears because 'this one thing I know',

I'll meet you on that Golden Shore; where all of God's children go.
